Malaysia: Human rights agenda for new government
As Najib Tun Razak prepares to take over as Prime Minister of Malaysia, Amnesty International said that the new administration faces major human rights challenges that need to be addressed.
The organization is calling on the new Prime Minister to initiate urgent reforms to the justice system in five key areas, as follows.
IF you have it, flaunt it. But no, sirs. Not in Bukit Gantang, Perak.
Several Umno members who had just returned to Kuala Lumpur from the durian land, are cheesed off that Barisan Nasional members are making their rounds there in luxury cars and expensive attire.
The group said these campaigners had not learnt from past by-elections.
“Moving around in big luxury cars, wearing expensive attire but talking about daily survival of kampung folks in a semi-urban surrounding doesn’t quite give the right impression about BN,” one of them said.
The big announcement that PKR strategist Saifuddin Nasution has promised Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will announce on Saturday probably concerns the defection of the “entire Kedah PPP” to PKR.
The defection, if it takes place, could have a significant impact on the outcome of the closely fought Bukit Selambau by-election.
PPP sources said the defection is being organised and led by former Kedah PPP chairman and incumbent PPP vice-president Datuk V. Nadarajah who when contacted declined to comment.
PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is back in town and promises a big announcement in his ceramah tomorrow night that "is directly or indirectly related to Najib".
Strategist Saifuddin Nasution told reporters this when quizzed over whether the "surprise announcement" would be on defections from Barisan Nasional.
The Machang MP's statement is consistent with the amount of pressure Pakatan Rakyat has been heaping on newly-installed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
1. HINDRAF acknowledges that our grass root supporters are disappointed that the Bukit Selambau seat was not offered to any of the 5 short listed candidates (two of whom were HINDRAF coordinators and remaining 3 were reputable KEADILAN local leaders) and urge our supporters to remain focussed and calm.
2. I had spoken to HINDRAF National Coordinator RS Tanendran and he confirms that most of his statements had been taken out of context and manipulated by the government run media to portray that HINDRAF does not support PAKATAN to create confusion and anxiety amongst supporters.

PUTRAJAYA, April 3 — Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has officially handed over the leadership of the country to new prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and left the prime minister’s department at 5.30pm today.
The power transition had taken place earlier behind closed doors and was witnessed by Chief Secretary Tan Sri Mohd Sidek Hassan.
Before being driven off with his wife Tun Jeanne Abdullah, the former prime minister walked down the steps of the country’s corridor of power for the last time today flanked by the media.
Najib and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, walked respectfully behind the couple as they said goodbye to hundreds of staff from the prime minister’s department.
High Court senior assistant registrar Nor Hatini Abdul Hamid ordered Raja Petra to pay RM500,000 in general damages, RM300,000 in aggravated damages and RM200,000 in exemplary damages to Abdul Azim.
He also told Malaysians in his maiden address that the Barisan Nasional will comprehensively review the Internal Security Act.

I'm a care worker on less than £7 an hour with no pension – but Brown and the G20 are doing nothing to help millions like me
Claudia Campbell is one of millions of people working in Britain forced to live on very low pay.
As a care worker in Birmingham she spends long hours helping people with learning disabilities.
Despite her work being both demanding and important Claudia earns just £6.56 an hour – that's just £838 a month.[ more ]
In any serious political effort, it does not make any sense in creating more enemies.Unfortunately for some amateurs, emotions and silly ideas masquerading as ideology often screw up the hard work of the rest by creating enemies unnecessarily.
Former Selangor Menteri Besar Dr Mohd Khir Toyo and entourage spent almost RM1 million in an official trip to Morocco and France from Dec 17 to 24 in 2004.
The expenditure included a visit to the Paris Disneyland and a four-day transit stopover at Dubai.
This was revealed at the state’s Special Select Committee on Competence, Accountability and Transparency (Selcat) inquiry today.
Perhaps you do understand why there are contradictory dreams. But if you do not, this is the reason of why I am writing this humble letter to you. I would like to assure you that those contradictions are not signs of confusion or a sign of danger. Rather, very positively, it is only a sign of how diverse our society is.[ more ]
But even the tolerant and spiritual Abdullah could not resist a kick at the pack of snapping hyenas around him when he retired last week after nearly six years as everyone's fall guy.
Unless, Abdullah warned, the United Malays National organization (UMNO), the party that has dominated government since independence from Britain in 1957, stops silencing its critics, jailing its opponents and discriminating against minorities, it is on the fast track to political oblivion. [more]

It was reported earlier that Khalid will be meeting with Wong this week.[more]
Menteri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim said the proposed increase in tariff is unjustified because of the poor performance of the water concessionaire and the state will take it to court as a last resort.
Khalid said the state would first try arbitration, as provided for in the agreement, should higher tariff be approved.[more]
Campaigning for the Bukit Gantang and Bukit Selambau by-elections has run into a bizarre roadblock, with the police stepping in to dictate what PKR cannot say or do in the intense battle to win votes.
In November 2008 we urged President-elect Barack Obama, in his first 100 days in office, to take concrete steps to counter terror with justice. With 30 days to go, the record is mixed – we need another push.
By signing executive orders to close Guantánamo, suspend military commission trials, and taking substantial steps towards ending the CIA’s use of secret detention and torture, President Obama has made important moves in the right direction.
Nevertheless, in the first two months of the new administration only one Guantánamo detainee was released, and none was charged for trial in federal court, although the one “enemy combatant” held on the US mainland was. At the same time, the new administration has claimed broad authority to continue to hold detainees in the context of what, like its predecessor, it appears to regard as a global “war”.
Also, despite mounting evidence that torture and enforced disappearance were authorized and carried out by the USA over the past seven years, the new administration has not yet moved to support the establishment of an independent commission of inquiry and no criminal investigations have been initiated.[more]
